Ed Sheeran has recently confirmed almost all the details of his highly anticipated new record project in the early hours of March 1st. The singer has confirmed that Substract will be the closure of his first musical pentalogy and that the album will be released on May 5th.
Subtract, an album marked by a hard year in his life
“I’ve been working on Substract for a decade, trying to sculpt the perfect acoustic album, writing and recording hundreds of songs with a clear vision of what I believed it should be. Then, at the start of 2022, a series of events changed my life, my mental health, and even the way I saw music and art” begins by expressing the singer about the conception of this new project.
“Writing songs is my therapy. It helps me make sense of my feelings. I wrote without thinking about what the songs should be, I just wrote whatever came into my head. And just a week ago, I replaced a job decades with my deepest and darkest thoughts. In less than a month, my pregnant wife was found to have a tumor with no possible treatment until she gave birth, my best friend Jamal, a brother to me, died suddenly, and I saw myself I myself defended the integrity of my career as a composer in court. I was involved in a spiral of fear, depression, and anxiety” admits Ed Sheeran about the personal process he lived through in 2022 that has undoubtedly marked the conception of his new album.
“I felt like I was drowning, my head below the surface, gasping for breath but not being able to find air. As an artist, I didn’t feel like I could put my work out into the world without accurately feeling what it represents where I am and how I am.” I need to express myself at this point in my life. This album is completely that. It’s opening the trap to my soul for the first time. I’m not trying to create an album that people will like. I’m trying to put out something that is honest and It’s the truth of where I am in my adult life. This is the last entry in my February diary and my way of making sense of it all. A new conceptual work that has shown the artist from his origins to the present, showing his versatility in different musical genres such as rock, pop, and rap and that seems to end in a much more acoustic work than we could imagine.
There will be 14 songs that are part of this new studio album (18 in the deluxe edition), the seventh of his career.

The color of Subtract and the presentation tour
As usual in his previous works, this new album will be marked by a specific color. His way of confirming it came a few days ago through a tweet in which he asked his followers if they weren’t excited about his arrival with a yellow heart. The cover features Ed Sheeran’s blurred face in a close-up, complete with yellow strokes.
Finally, the artist has confirmed that his new songs will sound on his already announced world tour and that he will visit the United States in 2024 to present his new album as part of his The Mathematics Tour.
